Some of our schools operate a biometric cashless canteen system. Cashless catering enables us to deliver a more efficient and faster service. As a school we ensure that we comply with any regulations and guidelines set out by local authority and governors. The Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 states that schools must get parent consent for the use of this technology.

The system is safe and secure and has already provided the school and students with a number of benefits including;

  • Efficiency of service through faster delivery
  • Confidentiality for free school meals entitlement
  • Improved drive to promote healthy eating
  • Greater parental control over student spending

Biometrics and Security

Students, parents and staff can rest assured that the fingerprint images cannot be used by any other source for identification purposes. The system uses an image of the fingerprint to create a mathematical algorithm and then discards the fingerprint; only the numbers remain and these cannot be reinterpreted back into a fingerprint image. Fingerprinting is purely voluntary and those not wishing to sign up will be able to purchase a card at £5.00 per child.
